V-Belts Selection Guide for Power Transmission
Follow simple steps for as to How to select v-belts to transmit power to machinery driven shaft:-
Step 1 of HIC Universal v-belt Selection:
Speed Ratio measurement- RPM of driving faster shaft divided By RPM of driven slower shaft shall give Speed ratio. Also, can be calculated by dividing Pitch diameter of larger pulley By PCD of smaller pulley.
Step 2 of HIC Universal v-belt Selection:
Design Power calculation - Correct H.P. for Service Factor or design power is calculated multiplying motor drive power and service factor for the driven duty class from HIC Universal Technical Data Sheet tables for selection purpose.
Step 3 of HIC Universal v-belt cross section Selection:
Belt Cross Section choice - Select appropriate belt section profile either wedge or narrow or classical considering design power referring diagrams in HIC Universal Technical Data Sheet.
Banded belts be selected for drives with pulsating or shock loads. Select 2 bands of 3 for replacing 6 numbers v belts, 2 bands of 4 for replacing 8 belts, that is, use two or More bands where more than 5 belts are required.
Step 4 of HIC Universal v-belt cross section Selection:
Pulley or Sheave Diameter choice - Select right and higher size preferably greater than minimum recommended belt pulley diameter for successful power transmission at given speed as per HIC Universal Technical Data Sheet Selection. For quick reference, minimum allowable OD or PCD for v-belt cross section being:-
A (Cross Section) – 71 mm ; B – 112 mm ; C – 190 mm ; D – 300 mm ; E – 500 mm ;
AX (Cross Section) – 63 mm ; BX – 90 mm ; CX – 140mm ;
SPZ (Cross Section) – 63 mm ; SPA – 90 mm ; SPB – 140 mm ; SPC – 224 mm ;
3V (Cross Section) – 63 mm ; 5V – 140 mm ; 8V – 315 mm ;
XPZ (Cross Section) – 56 mm ; XPA – 71 mm ; XPB – 112 mm ; XPC – 190 mm
Banded belts groove spacing profile selection must be OK as per ISO standards or RMA standards, and, need to be specified while ordering.
Step 5 of HIC Universal v-belt cross section Selection:
Pitch Length of Belt measurement- Corresponding to given pulley diameters and centre distances, calculate pitch length of v-belts using following formula while selection:-
L ( in mm ) = 2C + 1.57 ( D + d ) + ( D – d )2
Where, C = Centre distance, mm
D = pitch diameter of larger pulley, mm
d = pitch diameter of smaller pulley, mm
Step 6 of HIC Universal v-belt Selection:
Centre Distance calculation – Actual centre distance based on selected v belt length be calculated using following formula:-
C = A + √A2 – B
Where, A = L - 0.3925 ( D + d )
B = ( D – d )2
Step 7 of HIC Universal v-belt Selection:
Power Rating of Belt computation – Actual belt power rating obtained equals Belt basic power rating x Correction factor for belt length x Arc of contact correction factors.
Horse Power, H.P. = Kilowatts (kw) x 1.341
Step 8 of HIC Universal v-belt Selection:
Number of Belts Required to run the drive estimation – Design power be divided by power rating of selected belt will give the result of number of belts required, to be rounded off up to first integer. Installation allowance of decreasing centre distance to be able to fit the belt and take-up allowances so as to provide tension to the belt must be kept in mind while selection.
