Control Valve Selection Method for Piping Fluid Flow Pressure
Follow simple steps for as to How to select ball valve or globe valve or butterfly valve or needle valve or non-return valve or gate valve or quick release coupling or cam groove coupling with respect to fluid conveyed for hydraulic pneumatic pressure control of industrial processes:-
Step 1 of HIC Universal control valve Selection:
Fluid Passed medium- Control valve through which fluid to be conveyed like Liquid or Gas or Solids, and, based on flowing medium proper valve is to be selected for desired application.
Step 2 of HIC Universal control valve Selection:
Nature of Fluid to flow- Select suitable industrial valve based on type of fluid whether liquid or gas or solids, and these fluid’s nature.
Where valve has to handle liquid except gas or solids, nature of LIQUID is whether Neutral Water or neutral Oil OR Corrosive Acid or corrosive Alkaline OR Hygienic Beverages or Slurry.
Water valve application is quite suitable to be used with Gate valve or Ball valve or Plug valve or Butterfly valve.
Oil valve application is quite suitable to be used with Ball valve or Globe valve or Butterfly valve or Plug valve or Needle valve.
Acid valve application is quite suitable to be used with Gate valve or Ball valve or Globe valve or Butterfly valve.
Alkaline valve application is quite suitable to be used with Gate valve or Ball valve or Globe valve or Butterfly valve.
Beverages valve and Food grade valve application is quite suitable to be used with Butterfly valve or Ball valve.
Slurry valve application is quite suitable to be used with Plug valve or Ball valve or Butterfly valve.
Similarly, where valve has to handle gas, nature of GAS is whether Neutral Air or neutral Steam OR Corrosive Acid Vapors or corrosive Chlorine or Vacuum.
Air control valve application is quite suitable to be used with Gate valve or Needle valve or Globe valve or Ball valve or Non Return valve or Plug valve or Butterfly valve.
Steam valve application is quite suitable to be used with Non-Return valve or Ball valve or Needle valve or Globe valve.
Vapor control valve application is quite suitable to be used with Plug valve or Butterfly valve or Ball valve or Needle valve.
Chlorine service valve application is quite suitable to be used with Ball valve or Globe valve.
Valve has to otherwise handle solids except liquid or gas, nature of SOLIDS is whether Lubricating Powder such as Graphite or Talcum application, Gate valve or other types found suitable.
Step 3 of HIC Universal control valve Selection:
Functionality of valve and Design pattern - Identify if valve is required for 2-way valve for flow, pressure or temperature control or a 3-way mixing or anti-reverse flow or diverting application valve, thus, control valve selection can be made by following valve features and meeting function criteria:-
Ball valves> Quick On or Off flow, easy to clean.
Globe valves> Exact Throttling but high pressure drop, Very Good flow control, difficult to clean.
Butterfly valves> High Capacities flow control capability, low pressure drop.
Plug valves> Very Swift On or Off conditions are more rugged, but expensive.
Non Return valves or Check valves> High Resistance to flow in one direction only, anti-reverse flow.
Gate valves> Infrequent operation, tight shut-off.
Step 4 of HIC Universal control valve Selection:
Size plus End Connection of valve choice– Nominal Bore size MM or Inch of valve be chosen for pipe connection and Threaded size or Flanged class table reference or Socket weld or Butt-Weld.
Flow Capacity in lb/hr be also estimated for valve.
Step 5 of HIC Universal control valve Selection:
Body Material of valve to be chosen– Select Body material if significant for piping valve compatibility as per flow media handling application, characteristics of metal for quick reference stated below:-
Carbon Steel valve A-216 WCB grade> Higher pressure ratings withstanding capacity than stainless steel valve.
Stainless Steel valve SS304 quality> Resists corrosion outstandingly and high pressure ratings withstanding capacity slightly lower than carbon steel valve.
Cast Steel valve> High pressure ratings withstanding capacity for pipeline size above 2” size.
Forged Steel valve > High and low Temperature withstanding capacity including pressure with good sealing performance, lighter in weight valve superb for isolation applications below 3” size.
Brass valve > Extreme Cold climatic conditions withstanding capacity, good for water and air services application.
Step 6 of HIC Universal control valve Selection:
Pressure Rating of valve –Pressure rating at the valve inlet minimum and maximum operating or working pressure be known for the purpose of selecting from vast range of industrial valves models design pattern suitable for application.
Step 7 of HIC Universal control valve Selection:
Seat Material and Temperature at the valve inlet– Valve seat material must be selected based upon flow medium service application plus resistance to temperature and operating pressure resistance withstanding capacity, characteristics of valve seat properties for quick reference stated below:-
CFT valve seat material> Carbon graphite filled Teflon sealing, good for Steam services to withstand temperature of -50ºF to + 450 ºF.
FKM valve seat material> Viton elastomer sealing superb for Concentrated Acids, except steam application for all rated pressures valve to withstand temperature of -20ºF to + 400 ºF.
GFT valve seat material> Glass fibres filled Teflon sealing, good Chemical resistance plus super Thermal Conductivity superior to Virgin Teflon PTFE for very low cold flow services.
GRAPHOIL valve seat material> Fire rated quality sealing for any flow media to withstand temperature of -70ºF to + 1000 ºF.
NBR valve seat material> Nitrile synthetic rubber sealing superb for Hydrocarbon and general purpose services to withstand temperature of -13ºF to + 212ºF equivalent -25ºC to + 100ºC.
PEEK valve seat material> Carbon reinforced polyetheretherketone sealing excellent Chemical Resistant suitable for Nuclear radiation, Tobacco services up to 4500 psi pressure rating to withstand temperature of + 600ºF.
POM valve seat material> Delrin sealing good Hydraulic Oil Resistant plus Natural Gas resistance except oxygen and steam services up to 6000 psi pressure rating to withstand temperature of -70ºF to + 180ºF.
PTFE valve seat material> Virgin Teflon sealing superb Chemical Resistance plus good for Cryogenic material flow application except molted alkali metals services to withstand temperature of -430ºF to + 450ºF.
VMQ valve seat material> Silicone elastomer sealing superb for Hot Air plus Chlorinated Diphenyls except steam or water or petroleum fluid services to withstand temperature of -58ºF to + 356ºF equivalent -50ºC to + 180ºC.
